Job Description

• Receive report from outgoing tour.
• Makes walking rounds on all mothers and infants.

3 Count narcotics with the outgoing and/or incoming nurse.

• Ensure that all equipment is in working condition.
• Ensures that supplies are adequate for the shift.
• Checks code cart and replenishes as needed.
• Perform quality control of Blood Glucose detennination and maintains the cleanliness of the macl1ine.
• Participates in staff meetings and conferences.
• Encourages rooming-in and breastfeeding, e.g. explaining the benefits of breastfeeding infants.
• Provides direct nursing care, i.e. to ante/postpartum mothers and infants in the nursery.
• Updates nursing care plan for mother and infant.
• Report unusual events to Head Nurse.
• Participates in ongoing PI activities.
• Assist in the orientation of new staff members.
• Admit, discharge or transfer mother and infant as per policy.
• Assume the role and responsibility of the Head Nurse in her absence.
• Identify potential social problems and take appropriate action, e.g. collaborates with social worker, shelter for mother/infant.
• Provides postpartum tracking and infant care to mothers.

Minimum Qualifications

• A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
• Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
