ABOUT THE ROLE:
A Legislative Director may serve as the lead staff person helping state legislators develop policy on state-federal matters, including workforce and economic development. This position requires substantial knowledge in state-federal policy, independence, initiative, and political sensitivity. The position reports to the vice president of state-federal relations.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
Identifies, monitors, analyzes, and interprets congressional and federal agency actions affecting state governments.
Writes clear, accurate informational and lobbying documents for various audiences.
Provides information and assistance to state legislators and legislative staff.
Develops, plans, and coordinates relevant programs for the committee.
Maintains a network of contacts in the states and among federal agencies.
Works effectively in coalitions to promote NCSL positions.
Develops lobbying strategies and represents state legislative concerns.
Coordinates work with other NCSL staff.
Plays a leadership role on internal task forces.
Performs other responsibilities as needed.

Supervisor/Management Responsibilities: A Legislative Director may have supervisory responsibilities.
THE WORK ENVIRONMENT: This full-time position is mostly performed in an office environment, with occasional travel required. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree plus six years of work experience with state legislatures or related fields.
Ability to serve as a subject matter expert in the policy arena.
Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills.
Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with legislators and staff.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
Ability to supervise and lead others.
Ability to work in a politically neutral manner.
Ability to travel by air and work extended hours as needed.
