POSITION SUMMARY The Japanese Translator/Interpreter provides translation, interpretation and language support for the annual Culinary and Culture Tour of Japan and other applicable events for Culinary Institute of America (CIA) Bachelor's Students who are a part of the Japanese Cuisine Concentration. The primary function of this role is to translate/interpret Japanese to English and English to Japanese for the Liaison to Japan, for the presenters on the tour, for meetings during the tour, and for the students. The role also requires the Translator/Interpreter to function as co-guide with the Liaison to Japan throughout the tour itinerary.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES - Provide translation/interpretation services for the Culinary and Culture Tour of Japan for the specific outlined tour itinerary, pre and post-tour meetings, and any additional events as required, accurately translating information with original tone and intent.
- Serve as co-guide with the Liaison to Japan for the full duration of the tour for the students.
- Participate in pre and/or post-tour virtual meetings with students as requested.
- Provide sight translation when required (i.e., read in Japanese and speak in English).
- Assist with document translation as needed.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Japanese language and/or culture, culinary education, or significant work experience in lieu thereof.
Experience:
- Experience providing professional Japanese translation and interpretation services.
- Demonstrated fluency in the use of the Japanese language.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Familiarity with Japanese customs and etiquette.
- Familiarity with locations included in the tour.
- Experience co-guiding a tour in Japan with college students.
- Bachelor's Degree in Japanese Studies.
- Experience living and working in culinary environments in Japan.
REQUIRED SKILLS - Ability to process information quickly, concisely and recognizing sensitive cultural differences.
- Ability to explain and interpret complex culinary concepts in Japanese and English.
- Ability to present during tours using the spirit of hospitality consistent with the Culinary Institute of America reputation.
- Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required.
- Collegial and positive in outlook and approach.
WORKING CONDITIONS - Must be able to travel to / from Japan from home location on specified dates.
- Regular work requires a great deal of sitting and standing for extended periods.
- Must be available to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required due to business needs.
