Duties

What you will typically be responsible for:

• Confirming the identities of persons via fingerprints
• Notifying Law Enforcement & other agencies of who they have in custody
• Assisting in manual fingerprint collection
• Verifying the work of colleagues by providing confirmatory checks
• Performing intake and relaying information quickly and accurately
• Properly studying for and passing the Fingerprint Academy
• Learning and becoming fluent in the operation of AFIS

Requirements

License Required:

• Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of State valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the application process.

Education:

• Possession of a High School Diploma, GED Equivalency or a High School Proficiency Certificate and completion of 15 semester units, or 20 quarter units, from an accredited college or university which must include: a course in chemistry or biology (with laboratory section); and one course in Fingerprints or Evidence collection.

Substitution of Education:

• One (1) year of full-time, or its equivalent, of experience in a law enforcement agency in an assignment involving evidence handling or fingerprint comparisons will substitute for the Fingerprint or Evidence Collection course.

Sensory Requirement:

• Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities and differences between shade, degree or value of colors, shapes, sounds, forms, textures, or physical appearance associated with job-related objects, materials, tasks, or people.

Background:

• A thorough background investigation will be conducted by the Office of the Sheriff. The applicant shall not have been convicted of a felony in this state, or in any other state, or federal jurisdiction. Any offense in any other state, or in any other federal jurisdiction, which would have been a felony if committed in this state will also result in automatic disqualification.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Completion of a Law Enforcement internship
• Completion of a bachelors degree or higher
• Experience in a public jurisdiction performing fingerprint identification
• Experience operating the automated 10-Print System (AFIS)
• Membership in related professional organizations
• Possession of certification as a 10-print examiner
