Job Description

Martin County is currently accepting applications for a part-time Correctional Officer!

Under general supervision, a Correctional Officer performs all operational duties necessary for the proper care and custody of jail inmates, including general custodial and detention functions essential to the operation of the detention center. The Correctional Officer ensures that the detention center is operating in a peaceful manner.

All employees hired on a part-time basis are required to work a minimum of three shifts per month. Shifts and hours may vary based on the needs of the department.

Successful applicants are subject to completion of reference verification and background investigation completed by the Martin County Sheriff's office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Processes inmates in and out of jail, maintains custody and care of all inmates and their possessions.
  • Transports inmates to the courtroom, doctor's office and other locations, as required, and must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Completes all necessary logs, records and reports pertaining to the booking, care and release of inmates.
  • Inspects all incoming packages and gifts, transfers phone calls and feeds inmates.
  • Initiates searches for contraband and obtains specimens for drug testing of inmates.
  • Distributes and documents medications to inmates.
  • Receives and logs department communications.
  • Performs minor maintenance of grounds and buildings.
  • Perform various duties related to Electronic Home Monitoring functions as required.
  • Requires 24-hour Shift Work, including weekends and Holidays.
  • Fingerprints and photographs inmates and types fingerprint cards. Classifies incoming inmates and places them in proper cells.
  • Observe prisoners directly and indirectly through visual, audio and video monitoring, to ensure the physical safety of prisoners, staff and the public.
  • Promotes acceptable attitudes and behaviors of inmates to assist them in adjusting to a confinement setting.
  • Performs work in a manner consistent with safe practices.
  • Delivers meals and collects afterwards. Ensures that cells, facilities and grounds are kept sanitary.Checks on inmates on a routine and regular basis.
  • Enforces institutional rules and standard operation procedures (SOP). Reports infractions orally/written, confronting prisoners who violate rules.Initiates segregation or disciplinary procedures and performs enforcement activities in compliance with department policies.Explains rules and procedures of the facility to (individual/group) prisoners so they understand the expectations and consequences of their behavior.
  • Participates in continuing education and training sessions on appraisal methods, law changes, computer skills and other related matters. Ensures required certification and licensure credentials remain valid.
  • Performs other work-related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Specialized training beyond high school, but less than an associate's degree.
  • Less than one year of progressive experience in related field along with the skills, knowledge and abilities required; or equivalent combined education and experience.

LICENSURE

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Knowledge of modern jail operation techniques.
  • Familiar with court rulings relevant to handling of inmates' rights.
  • Ability to deal with inmates firmly, fairly and objectively.
  • Ability to receive direction and supervision from supervisors.
  • Possesses basic skill in the operation of computer, and other modern office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The position has good working conditions in general but is a diversified job requiring sustained mental effort related to public contacts, organizational issues, planning and technical areas.
