Summary

The Behavioral Addiction Specialist is responsible for providing assessment, education and individualized/group counseling to patients with behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance use disorders) and their families. The work schedule may vary to include evening, weekend, or holiday coverage on a rotational basis as needed.

Key Functions

  1. Gather psychosocial information regarding behavioral addictions, substance use, and co-occurring disorder related issues from the patient and submit a written assessment to the treatment team; collaborate with the treatment team in establishing a diagnosis as well as formulating and implementing an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

  • Demonstrates competence in gathering and interpreting information regarding co-occurring disorders with clients from diverse cultures, ages and spiritual beliefs.
  • Utilizes structured interviews to obtain psychosocial information utilized to understand co-occurring disorder.
  • Documents assessment and consultation according to Menninger standard for content and timeliness.
  • Provides and receives pertinent information for interdisciplinary team meetings.

  1. In collaboration with the treatment team, identify ongoing treatment needs and establish measurable goals and objectives for each patient.
  • Demonstrates competence in the assessment and treatment of behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the bio-psycho-social influences and effects of substance use and addictive disorders by:
  • providing appropriate patient family education;
  • meeting regularly with patient to assess progress toward treatment goals; and
  • demonstrating an understanding of medication assisted therapies
  • Documents according to policy and communicates findings with the treatment team for integration into the treatment plan.
  • Assures attendance and participation at mutual support meetings such as AA, NA, SAA, SLAA, GA, SMART Recovery and other support programs.
  • Collaborates with the client and family to develop a recovery management plan.
  • Utilize family sessions to explore strengths and challenges of the family related to engaging in recovery from a co-occurring disorder
  • Provide weekly individual counseling session for each identified patient.

  1. Provide training, consultation and presentations on behavioral addictions and co-occurring disorders to staff, patients, and their families.
  • Provide consultation to other addiction professional and Menninger clinicians on best practices for the assessment and treatment of behavioral addictions.
  • Serve as a hospital resource including providing staff training related to behavioral addictions.
  • Provide supervision and training as needed to trainees related to assessment and treatment of co-occurring disorders.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and self-care through in-service training, supervision, workshops, and grand rounds, and other educational activities.
  • Demonstrates effective mentoring skills with assigned staff or trainees.
  • Participates in approved, clinic-based research projects.
  • Collaborates effectively with the Addiction & Recovery Service leader in meeting the goals of supervision and training.
  • Give presentations to professional and community audiences as initiated or required by the Administrative or Clinical director.

  1. In collaboration with the treatment team, identify individual and group resources for assigned patients and family members; serve as liaison between the patient and these resources; initiate and maintain ongoing communication with referral sources.
  • Assists patient and family in locating treatment resources related to co-occurring disorders and behavioral addictions.
  • Assures appropriate recovery related discharge planning and referrals.
  • Communicates with other treatment providers in accordance with the treatment plan.

Education: Required: Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology.

License/Certification: Required: Credentialed in Behavioral Addictions (Gambling, Problematic Sexual Behavior, and/or Gaming disorders).

Preferred: LCSW or LPC and, LCDC in the State of Texas. LPC-A or LMSW must be eligible to obtain full licensure within 90 days of hire.

Experience: Required: Three years experience in the field of mental health and addictions including experience with standardized addiction assessment tools and the treatment of patients with co-occurring disorders.
