Assistant City Attorney . In this role, you will provide crucial legal support to the City Attorney and, under their direction, to the City Commission, Administration, Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), City Manager, City staff, and advisory boards. The work is characterized by a variety of professional level duties and responsibilities involving the delivery of legal services. This position requires a high level of critical thinking and ingenuity in bringing successful resolution to pending issues within the City.

Duties & Responsibilities - Direct assistance to the City Attorney on various assignments; Attends City Commission and CRA Board meetings and workshops, Special Magistrate hearings, and Planning and Zoning Board meetings and other advisory board meetings if directed by the City Attorney
- Upon direction of the City Attorney, conducts investigations and interviews based upon alleged or potential legal problems and issues of both a routine and complex nature, and prepares reports or opinions based upon findings made
- May be directed to represent the City before various local and state departments and other governmental subdivisions, including county court and circuit court, and before other municipalities
- Reviews contracts, leases, and similar documents ranging from those that are routine for a municipal corporation to those of a more complex nature
- Draft legal opinions, drafts ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, easements, leases, and other legal documents
- Responds to inquiries and complaints including responding to requests of the City Attorney, City Manager, and elected officials for advice, information, and interpretation
- May present issues to the City Commission, CRA Board, and City boards as needed or directed by the City Attorney
- Assists in the preparation and defense of civil cases involving the City working with outside counsel and assists the City Attorney in providing guidance to and reviewing the work of other attorneys serving as outside counsel retained by the City and insurance counsel assigned by the City
- Represents the City in municipal ordinance prosecution cases in Broward County court
- Upon request of the City Attorney, assists the City Attorney in conducting legal research and prepares reports, memoranda, and drafts opinions containing proposed or recommended courses of action or solutions
- Meets with City employees, CRA staff, and the public as needed
- May be designated as Acting City Attorney, Acting CRA Attorney, or both in the absence of the City Attorney
- Performs assignments independently and makes legal determinations in matters of substantial importance, which require consultation with the City Attorney
- Independently plans, investigates, and negotiates on behalf of the City to resolve legal matters
Qualifications What's required: (Minimum Requirements) - Juris Doctor degree from an accredited school of law
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience practicing in the area of Florida municipal law and related fields. Related fields include land use/zoning, code compliance, real estate, procurement, contract drafting and administration, public records, Sunshine Law, construction law, and other local government-related experiences
- Must be an attorney at law in good standing with the Florida Bar and possess a Florida Bar "Certificate of Good Standing" and a license to practice law in the state of Florida
What's preferred: (Desired Requirements) - Five (5) to Ten (10) years of experience practicing in the area of Florida municipal law and related fields. Related fields include land use/zoning, code compliance, real estate, procurement, contract drafting and administration, public records, Sunshine Law, construction law, and other local government-related experiences
- Experience in working with Florida Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRA) and applicable laws
- Board certification in City, County, and Local Government Law
- Experience in municipal land use and zoning matters, as well as experience with Florida Code Compliance ("Code Enforcement") matters and procedures is preferred and highly desirable
