Duties

* Ensures artifacts from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet Federal curatorial facility standards.

* Conducts routine cultural resource inventories for determining impacts of cultural resources due to developmental activities in accordance with applicable federal laws, regulations and policies.

* Conducts site testing and excavation, and provides professional recommendations on the significance of sites, structures, or objects identified in surveys.

* Ensure compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

* Ensures that heritage resource services are adequate to meet multiple resource planning and project requirements.

* Interacts with management, landowners, state government officials, tribal governments, interested parties and the public to provide information and develop opportunities for partnerships.

* Drafts heritage and paleontological resource input for portions of environmental documents such as environmental assessments and planning documents.

* Ensures that inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various databases.

* Utilized the heritage resource and other resource spatial data to perform precedented analyses to assist with land use planning, decision making, and day-to-day management activities

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:

1. Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:

History of archeology:

* Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.

* Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.

* Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development.

* Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa.

AND

* Six semester hours of related course work in:

* geography, geology, or cultural geography;

* history, historiography, or historical archeology;

* environmental studies;

* scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or

* surveying;

AND

* Archeological field school

2. Related Curriculum: A degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

3. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

Additional Experience Required: In addition to meeting the basic education requirements, you must meet specialized experience requirements.

Specialized Experience Requirements:

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement(s); please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.

To qualify for the GS-07 grade level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: conducting cultural resource inventories and reporting in compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to provide input into planning documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, ensuring inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases.

To qualify for the GS-09 grade level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: conducting cultural resource inventories and reporting in compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to provide input into planning documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, ensuring inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Substitution of Education for Experience:

GS-07: One year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement degree in archeology, cultural anthropology, or other directly-related discipline;

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100%.

GS-09: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in archeology, cultural anthropology, or other directly related discipline;

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100%.
